Its eastern part remains the least explored by seismic studies. Knowledge about the region’s geology was largely shaped by the results produced by geological surveying of the islands and the adjoining mainland as well as gravity and magnetic data interpretation. Tectonic zonation of the Eastern Arctic region is discussed in a limited number of scientific papers. Some papers encompass the entire region, while others focus on its individual areas. Most existing tectonic models rest upon a morphological approach to identifying the key structural elements. Some models are supplemented by characteristics related to the inferred age of the basement. Geoscientists at LLL Gazpromneft Science and Technology Centre have accomplished tectonic zonation of the East Siberian and Chukchi Sea shelf by drawing on the combined evidence from G&amp;G data (marine seismic and airborne gravity and magnetic prospecting, geological surveying of the islands).
